Symbolic codes

4. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PHONE BOOTH IN THE CLIP:
5. HIS TWISTING AND TURNING IN HIS BED:

The part at the end of the clip where he is struggling with himself in the bed (not to be interpreted the wrong way) shows to us that he is still struggling on the inside whether to conform to the “sunglasses people” or keep on rebelling against the flow of what everybody expects of him.
4. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PHONE BOOTH IN THE CLIP:

The phone booth is the single place in which Corey Hart can cry out about his defiance of the trend of sunglasses and their meaning (although this later result in him being thrown in a holding cell). It is an important part because we realize then and there that he is against the “sunglasses people” (a term that I have coined).
The use of the piping in the clip is to show Corey hart through leading lines (thanks to Ash Tubb for telling me this) this exhibits to the viewer that Corey is the centre of the video and that he is the most important thing in it.
3. THE USE OF MID AND HIGH CAMERA SHOTS:

1: THE SUNGLASSES AND THEIR SYMBOLIC MEANING:

The glasses have a very symbolic meaning to them. During the video clip
They depict the zombie like attitude displayed by the people and their entrapment in society. They also exhibit to the viewer that the wearers of the sunglasses have no sense of identity or any uniqueness to their personality. The sunglasses are very symbolic of what happens in real life for instance fashion trends are often copied by young females (15-25) which results in every attractive females(or not so attractive) looking the same as each therefore showing that they have no sense of individuality.
This may seem very irrelevant to the topic but my mother once said to me that it’s the trend setters that are the cool ones not the trend followers (this is wrong however because most attempted trend setters usually crash and burn in a flame of failure) but the idea is correct.

2.THE STAMPING ON THE FILE (PICTURE BELOW):

The stamping on the file perfectly exemplifies how society has condemned Corey for being different to the rest of the so called “normal” people (if you can call anything from the 80’s normal) the reason they have condemned him and placed him in the holding cell is because they are scared of change. This is very similar to real life in the way that some societies don’t like to accept different races either because they also are afraid of change.

3. THE USE OF SOLEMN FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND DARK CLOTHING BY THE PEOPLE THAT WEAR SUNGLASSES:

The use of the extremely solemn facial expressions in tandem with the dark clothing further exemplify my claim that the people are very much like zombies in the way that they are incapable of thinking for themselves. (for more clarification re-read question 1 of symbolic codes)

Technical Codes

1. THE USE OF THE DARK LIGHTING IN THE CLIP:

The use of dark lighting in this video clip gives the viewer a feeling that this clip is about a rather dark topic, which is confirmed by the whole Corey’s Inner struggle thing.

2. THE USE OF THE PIPING IN THE SCENE WHERE HE IS HEAD BOPPING:

The use of the piping in the clip is to show Corey hart through leading lines (thanks to Ash Tubb for telling me this) this exhibits to the viewer that Corey is the centre of the video and that he is the most important thing in it.

3. THE USE OF MID AND HIGH CAMERA SHOTS:

The use of high and mid camera shots in the clip is to convey to the viewer where we are opposed to Corey in the chain of superiority. This clip is quite confusing as the high and low camera angles change according to the status of whether he is wearing Sunglasses or not.

4: THE USE OF THE BIRDS EYE VIEW AT THE END OF THE CLIP:\

The use of the birds eye view is to let the viewer see just how bad Corey’s inner struggle on whether to wear sunglasses or not is.

5. THE FACT THAT THIS CLIP IS HARDCORE 80’S SPECIAL FX:

This clip is extremely stereotypical of an 80’s video clip because of the very cheesy (but hi-tech for its time) fading and disappearing effects that are produced. Also the concept of a whole song based around a pair of sunglasses could only have been conceived in the 80’s.

THERE ARE NO AUDIO OR WRITTEN CODES TO EXPLAIN ABOUT IN THIS VIDEO CLIP BY COREY HART.

Represention

This video clip is represented much like a lot of other 80’s clips. IT MAKES NO SENSE!!! This video clip is nothing more than an assorted bunch of random people wearing sunglasses trying to pass it off as a music video. This video is very much like other video’s from the 80’s that have a random topic such as EVERYBODY HAVE FUN TONIGHT, and KARMA CHAMELEON.

MY FAMILY IN HISTORY

A MAJOR TECHNOGICAL CHANGE THAT HAS INFLUENCED MY FAMILY:

The internet has definitely changed the way my mother works (sort of) because before the internet she was either looking after my 7 & 10 yr old brother and sister or working at the bureau of statistics (back then she was working with top of the line computer technology which is now obsolete). Now things have changed dramatically, she now uses the internet every single day of the week for either her university work or her web design business.

Another technological advance that has influenced my mother, though not in as positive a way as the internet is appliances (like blenders, and vacuums) she insists that they have made her workload double as hard except for her sprecial coffee machine and the fridge she says.

A MAJOR EVENT THAT INFLUENCED MY FAMILY:

The Vietnam war heavily influenced my mother. She says that it changed her view of both war and government, she was disgusted when Vietnam veterans were not given acces to RSL clubs because they had gone to war just like any other soldier and they got treated like second class citizens afterwards. She also knew to men that had been infected with the potentially fatal chemical weapon agent orange and their children were born with deformities because of it.

Another big event that affected my family was the events that occured on the 11th of september 2001 when two jumbo jets hijacked by terrorists were purposely guided into the 2 world trade centers. In fact fact my mother was playing a game on the computer and heard about in an online chat site as it was happening so my brother turned on the tv and we watched the second plane hit the tower live. This effected the whole way my family thought thought of war, they just thought it was people shooting at each other buut now they know that there are many other ways to commit an act of war.

MIGRATION, WHERE DID I MOVE FROM AND WHY?:

My family on my mothers side is said to go back to be as far as ninth generation Australians even though we have got heritage from many other cultures such as English(obviously), German, Spanish, Irish, Italian, and a little bit of Scottsh and Hungarian too for good measure.
My fathers side of the family migrated from Victoria when my dad was 4 weeks old (50 years ago) beacuse of my grandfathers work. With the intentions of moving back there in a couple of years it never happened because they were forming a solid life for themselves here in WA.

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CHANGES OVER TIME:

Cultural change never really effected my mother who went to 17 different schools during her childhood, her first best friend ever was an aboriginal girl, her current best friend is Zimbabwean
and her Aunties husband is an African American from Seattle so really my family has known nothing but cultural change.

Jack the Ripper: FRANCIS TUMBLETY

In 1888 Englands East End was shocked by a series of murders by a deranged serial killer named by the media as JACK THE RIPPER. There has been a lot of conjecture in the past 120 years about about the true identity of JTR with nobody having a outright point of view that links a suspect indefinately to the murders. In this report it will be my mission to blend a serious of facts and theories in order for you to believe in my point of view that JTR was indeed a man called....

FRANCIS TUMBLETY

The history surrounding FT's early years is quite sketchy with not many facts surrounding them. His birthplace has been much debated with Evans and Gaineys edition of Jack the Ripper first American serial killer saying that he was born in Canada while Jack the Ripper A-Z states that he was in actual fact born in Ireland, either way his family moved to New York sometime with in the next decade. neighbours and acquaintances labled him as 'a dirty, awkward, ignorant, uncared for, good for nothing boy... utterly devoid of education.', he also alledgedly sold pornographic literature on the canal boats in Rochester.

At around the age of 25-30 Tumblety moved from Rochester to Detroit where here he started his own medical practice as a herb doctor which must have been quite succesful for him as after that he always seemed to be within considerable wealth.

He later appeared in Montreal in 1857 where he continued with his profession as a prominent physician, unfortunately he was arrested for the attempted abortion of a prostitute called Philomene Dumas, it was said that he sold her a bottle of pills and liquid for the abortion but after legal disputes he was released on October 1. A verdict of not guilty was reached on October 24th and so there was no trial.

In his return to St. Louis he was suspected of being involved in the assasination of the president of the united states Abraham Lincoln, his suspicion was greatly based upon his bad choice of aliases such as J.H. Blackburn or Dr. L.P. Blackburn. He was also caught up in another conspiracy to send blankets infected with yellow fever to the north but he was later exonerated.

Francis Tumblety returned to Liverpool in the June of 1888 and was again in trouble with the Authorites, He was arrested and taken into custody on November 7th 1888 on charges of indecency and indecent assault with force against four men between July 27th and November 2nd.

JACK THE RIPPER VICTIMS:

MARY ANNE NICHOLS

Mary Anne Nichols was the wife of a printer called Willaim Nichols until her alcoholism and his lack of faithfulness led to the relationship breakdown. In the end Mary's drinking problem led to her becoming a prostitute which eventually led to her brutal death. her death was so horrendous

that her head was almost completely severed from her body.

ANNIE CHAPMAN

Annie Chapman was a large 45 year old woman who was apparently quite a nice woman and never did much wrong according to her neighbours.

ELIZABETH STRIDE

Elizabeth Stride was known to people close to her as 'Long Liz' and had lived in the house at 32 Flower and Dean st. for six years. She died at the hands of JTR being one of the few victims to have a witness se her just before she died. A man called Israel Schwartz claimed to have seen a man harrasingher but put it down to domestic abuse and just kept on walking on.

CATHERINE EDDOWES

After being released from the jailhouse she was reportedly last seen at around1:30 walking the street with a man. The constable on patrol found her dead body around fifteen minutes after she was last sighted.

MARY KELLY

Mary kelley was the only one of all of the JTR murders that worked as a prostitute full time and was also much younger than the other victims. Her dead body was found by her landlord who was asking for her rent.

....... Okay now that you know who the victims were i would like to show you some points as to why I suspect FRANCIS TUMBLETY to be JTR.

-Tumblety fits many of the requirements of a serial killer for example he had a hatred of most women and prostitutes.

-Tumblety was in London at the time.

-He had some medical knowledge mainly because of all the so called experiments he used to perform.

-one of the main people behind the the case Chief inspector Littlechild labeled him as a very likely suspect.

-One of the three detectives inspectors assigned to the case was sent to New York at the same time perhaps to pursue Tumblety.

- and perhaps one of the most condeming pieces of evidence is that the murders mysteriously stopped after he fled from London on 24th November.

Well i hope that i have satisfactorily sustained enough facts and figures in your mind to believe in my theory that Francis Tumblety was indeed JACK THE RIPPER.

INFLUENCIAL PEOPLE: MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

WHERE WHERE THEY BORN? WHERE DID THEY GROW UP?

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. was born on the 15Th of January 1929 and grew up as a young boy in the Georgian city of Atlanta.

WHAT POSITION(S)/ROLE(S) DID THIS PERSON OCCUPY DURING THEIR LIFETIME? WHERE THEY A MEMBER OF ANY GROUPS?

In 1954 MARTIN LUTHER KING accepted the role of pastor of the DEXTER AVENUE BAPTIST CHURCH, KING was also at that time a member of the executive committee

of the advancement of colored people. In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership conference. He was also the youngest man ever to win the Nobel peace prize.

WHAT ARE THEY MOST REMEMBERED FOR?

LUTHER KING was remembered for his efforts to gain equality for the ''black people'' of America. He dedicated the best years of his to the act of requisition of equal rights for his people. He to a lesser extent was a pastor for his local church but that is not where his legacy lies.

He was many things, a pastor, a Nobel prize winner, but most importantly he was a liberator.

WHAT INFLUENCES SHAPED THE EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF THIS EMINENT PERSON? WHAT SHAPED THEIR ATTITUDES AND VIEWS? WHAT PEOPLE INFLUENCED THEM IN THEIR ADULTHOOD?

In his early childhood his mother was arrested for not departing her seat so that a white passenger could sit down, and in his schooldays he also got in trouble for not getting of the seat for a white person.

On the religious aspect of things both his father and grandfather were pastors which would've highly influenced his religious beliefs. A man by the name of Howard Thurman educated Luther King JR. and his friends, and was a major factor in his fight for civil rights.

Martin Luther King visted Mahatma Ghandi in India in 1959. The trip influenced Luther King in a big way developing his understanding for non-violent resistance and his committment for civil rights.

WHAT VIEWS DID MARTIN LUTHER KING GET ACROSS TO THE WORLD?

MLK conveyed probably one of the most important messages of all: that there is a need for racial equaqlity and that to gain that we needed to get that by peaceful methods ONLY. MLK also preached his views on religion to his fellow church go-ers.

WHY DID HE SPREAD THESE VIEWS?

He spread these views as far and wide as he could because that was what he believed, it was what he dedicated hius whole life to doing. He did it so that he and his fellow African Americans could walk down a street without being prejudiced against.

WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES LED THEM TO BE TOUTED AS A HERO?
There was the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 which led to the abolishment of the Jim Crows laws. There was also the numerous marches he held in different states around the country that went a long way toward gaining equality for his people and there was also countless inspirational speeches that he carried out for his people to help gain awareness for civil rights.
WHAT INFLUENCES/CHANGES DID HE MAKE TO THE CULTURE OF HIS PEOPLE?
He changed the way black people percepted themselves and the way white people percepted them. He helped make people realise that blacks are from the same race as whites, the human race.
WHAT LEGACY DID HE LEAVE BEHIND TO FUTURE GENERATIONS?
I believe the legacy he left behind wasnt just that blacks and whites are equalls, its that no matter how farfetched it might seem its always worth following your dreams!

INVESTIGATION OF ECONOMICS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

WHAT NATURAL RESOURCES DOES THIS NATION HAVE: Britain is much more resorceful in the mining industry than many would think here is a list of some of their natural resources:

-Coal

-Petrolium

-Natural gas found in the british sector of the north gas

-Zinc

-Tin

-Limestone

-Iron ore

-Salt

-Slate

-Clay

-Chalk

-Gypsum

-Lead

-Silica

-Arable

WHAT SEECTORS OF THE ECONOMY ARE THE BIGGEST EMPLOYERS:

The financial sector of the economy is one of the main employers of British workers. London is the financial capital of the United Kingdom with financial services based around two districts, The City and the Docklands.

HOW ARE ECONOMIC DECISIONS MADE? WHO MAKES THEM:

Economic decisions are made by the people and their demand for a certain good or service. For example if a company distributes margarine and butter to a supermarket and the consumers only buy butter are they going to keep selling margerine or buy more butter to sell.

FIND THE LARGEST INDUSTRY IN THE U.K. IS IT MORE LABOUR INTENSIVE OR CAPITAL INTENSIVE:

The finance industry is probably the most important industry in the U.K. it basicaly keeps the country running. The finance industry is very definately a more capital intensive industry, because it doesnt require any heavy lifting or physical work, it mainly requires you to work with a lot of figures and facts.

DOES THIS NATION USE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY IN ITS ECONOMY, PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE:
Yes this nation is extremely advanced in terms of technology, many industries rely on technology to excell in that particular field. Industries such as the mining industry and construction work depend quite heavily on technology.

WHAT IS ONE OF THE MAJOR ECONOMIC PROBLEMS FACED BY THIS ECONOMY. WHAT ARE BUSSINESSES/GOVERNMENT DOING TO SOLVE IT?:
Government debt is quite a large scale problem in the UK with the debt alledgedly scaling up to 1.3 trillion pounds. So far the English government has made no plans to fix this large problem that threatens to ruin the UK economy.

IN WHAT WAYS IS THE UK'S ECONOMY SIMILAR TO AUSTRALIA'S:

The UK's economy is quite similar to australias in the way that they both have a market economy meaning that a lot of our economy is run by the people, and the government.

Western Australian economy

WHAT ARE THE MAIN GOODS AND SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE WA ECONOMY:

The Western Australian economy is largely based around the export of mining and petrolium commodities especially iron, alumina, natural gas, nickel, and gold.

WHICH REGIONS PRODUCE WHAT KIND OF GOODS AND SERVICES:

KIMBERLEY: Broome has a expanding pearling industry which operates around the Kimberley coast. Some of the leading farmers of them in the Kimberley are Paspaley pearls, Clipper pearls, Broome pearls and Willie creek pearl farm. One third of the worlds annual diamond production comes from the Argyle and the Ellendale diamond mines. Oil is taken from the Blina oil fields and gas might be taken from offshore sources soon. Zinc and Lead are taken from Pillara, Sallay Mallay and Cadjebut mines near Fitzroy Crossing.

PILBARA: The Pilbaras economy is dominated by the mining and petrolium industries. Most of Australias iron ore comes from the pilbara region with mines mainly centred around Tom Price and Newman. The iron ore industry employes around 9000 from the pilbara area. The Pilbara area is also a tourist hotspot with attractions such as karijini and Millstream-Chichester national parks, Dampier Archipelago and the Ningaloo Reef.

GOLDFIELDS: The economy of the goldfields is heavily based around agriculture and Fishing with wheat and barley being widely grown however this requires huge inputs of fertiliser.

SOUTHWEST: The economy of the southwest is very diverse. It is a major world producer of alumina and minerals, and also has substantial Agriculture, Timber, and Viticulture industries. It is also WA's biggest tourist spot outside Perth.

WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF THE ECONOMY:

Some strengths of the economy are how advanced we are in the mining industry, the fact that WA is ranked 2nd nationwide in average full time income with $61,622 being the average full time income just behind the ACT, The fact that we have quite a significant fishing industry helps the Western Australian cause. The fact that property values have risen can be a good and bad thing for the economy because its good for property owners but bad for property buyers. Some weaknesses of the WA economy is lack of labour workers meaning that we dont hav enoough people to work in skilled areas, and our unemployment rate which is still relativley high.

SOCIETY & ENVIRONMENT ASSIGNMENT ON CLIMATE CHANGE

AUSTRALIA

HOW HAS THIS REGION BEEN AFFECTED BY CLIMATE CHANGE ?:

-Around the year 2003 Australia started experiencing a long drought brought on by the effects of climate change. the drought has affected people in the out back a lot, so much so that a few farmers are opting to take the "easy way out" and are commiting suicide, this in turn has resulted in less farmers meaning that less crops are getting distrbuted to shopping centres so the price of items such as Meats, fruits, and vegetables are being drastically raised in price which in turn means that we pay for the immediate effects of global warming.

-The current continuation of rising sea temperatures means that one of Australias heritage listed areas, the Great Barrier Reef is under threat. In the summers of 1998, 2002, and 2006 mass coral bleaching occured which decreased the population of plankton meaning a lot of marine life died. If coral bleaching continues to occur as a yearly event due to the rising sea temperatures attributed to global warming many population of fish, birds, shark, and other animals relying on fish will die out, meaning that we will possibly have to pay rediculous prices for fish or even not eat fish at all.

HOW ARE PEOPLE IN AUSTRALIA ADDAPTING TO CLIMATE CHANGE?:

-As a individual you can take such initiatives to play your part in the fight against global warming by turning of all electrical implements at the power point, making sure that you turn of your lights when they dont neccasarily need to be on, and not littering. if everyone acknoledges that global warming is a THREAT than we have a greater chance of fighting it.

-Communities around Australia are taking the initiative and conducting seminars and fetes and other community activities to help raise awarness for climate change. The role of a community takes a big part in the fight against global warming if every community "chips in" eventually a communities effort will turn into a states effort then a countries effort then a global effort eventually the whole world will be able to win the war against climate change.

-Our government needs to "lift their weight" by organising more nation wide climate change awarness all the money they put in to election advertisments should be spent on handy tips of what we can do to avoid global warming. The government HAS made a effort by having the recent Earth Hour to cut down on our carbon emmisions but needs to convince the public to invest in things like green energy which use RENEWABLE RESOURCES .

WHAT ARE SOME FUTURE CHANGES TO THE ENVIRONMENT BECAUSE OF GLOBAL WARMING?:

-Weather wise, the CSIRO has predicted that a future rise in temperature of 2-3 detgrees could result in: 5-10% increase in tropical cyclone wind speeds, 20-30% increase in tropical cyclone rainfall, 12-16% increase in 100 year storm tides along Victoria's coast, 10% increase in forest fire danger in New South Wales and Western Australia, and More than a 10% increase in forest fire danger in south, central and north east Australia. All these changes could have a DEVESTATING effect on our countries forest and marine life potentially damaging our economy.

-The CSIRO has also predicted that climate change could effect our biodiversity and ecosystems a rise between 2-3 degrees could also result in: 10-40% loss of core habitat for Victoria and montane tropical vertebrate species, 92% of butterfly species core habitat decreases, and also devestating a 98% loss in bowerbird habitat in Northern Australia.

-Predeictions are being made that human GHG(greenhouse gases)emissions could increase severalfold aver the 21st centuryas a result Australias annual temperature are expected to increase 0.4-2.0 degrees celsius by the year 2030. Average rainfall in Australia south east and south west is expected to massiveley decline in future decades while regions such as the north west are expected to have increased rainfall.
