SOCIETY & ENVIRONMENT ASSIGNMENT ON CLIMATE CHANGE

AUSTRALIA

HOW HAS THIS REGION BEEN AFFECTED BY CLIMATE CHANGE ?:

-Around the year 2003 Australia started experiencing a long drought brought on by the effects of climate change. the drought has affected people in the out back a lot, so much so that a few farmers are opting to take the "easy way out" and are commiting suicide, this in turn has resulted in less farmers meaning that less crops are getting distrbuted to shopping centres so the price of items such as Meats, fruits, and vegetables are being drastically raised in price which in turn means that we pay for the immediate effects of global warming.

-The current continuation of rising sea temperatures means that one of Australias heritage listed areas, the Great Barrier Reef is under threat. In the summers of 1998, 2002, and 2006 mass coral bleaching occured which decreased the population of plankton meaning a lot of marine life died. If coral bleaching continues to occur as a yearly event due to the rising sea temperatures attributed to global warming many population of fish, birds, shark, and other animals relying on fish will die out, meaning that we will possibly have to pay rediculous prices for fish or even not eat fish at all.

HOW ARE PEOPLE IN AUSTRALIA ADDAPTING TO CLIMATE CHANGE?:

-As a individual you can take such initiatives to play your part in the fight against global warming by turning of all electrical implements at the power point, making sure that you turn of your lights when they dont neccasarily need to be on, and not littering. if everyone acknoledges that global warming is a THREAT than we have a greater chance of fighting it.

-Communities around Australia are taking the initiative and conducting seminars and fetes and other community activities to help raise awarness for climate change. The role of a community takes a big part in the fight against global warming if every community "chips in" eventually a communities effort will turn into a states effort then a countries effort then a global effort eventually the whole world will be able to win the war against climate change.

-Our government needs to "lift their weight" by organising more nation wide climate change awarness all the money they put in to election advertisments should be spent on handy tips of what we can do to avoid global warming. The government HAS made a effort by having the recent Earth Hour to cut down on our carbon emmisions but needs to convince the public to invest in things like green energy which use RENEWABLE RESOURCES .

WHAT ARE SOME FUTURE CHANGES TO THE ENVIRONMENT BECAUSE OF GLOBAL WARMING?:

-Weather wise, the CSIRO has predicted that a future rise in temperature of 2-3 detgrees could result in: 5-10% increase in tropical cyclone wind speeds, 20-30% increase in tropical cyclone rainfall, 12-16% increase in 100 year storm tides along Victoria's coast, 10% increase in forest fire danger in New South Wales and Western Australia, and More than a 10% increase in forest fire danger in south, central and north east Australia. All these changes could have a DEVESTATING effect on our countries forest and marine life potentially damaging our economy.

-The CSIRO has also predicted that climate change could effect our biodiversity and ecosystems a rise between 2-3 degrees could also result in: 10-40% loss of core habitat for Victoria and montane tropical vertebrate species, 92% of butterfly species core habitat decreases, and also devestating a 98% loss in bowerbird habitat in Northern Australia.

-Predeictions are being made that human GHG(greenhouse gases)emissions could increase severalfold aver the 21st centuryas a result Australias annual temperature are expected to increase 0.4-2.0 degrees celsius by the year 2030. Average rainfall in Australia south east and south west is expected to massiveley decline in future decades while regions such as the north west are expected to have increased rainfall.
